Secretarial Job description: Typical responsibilities

  • dealing with correspondence, collating information, writing reports, ensuring decisions made are communicated to the relevant people
  • organising, preparing agendas for, and taking minutes of meetings
  • liaising with external stakeholders where necessary
  • engaging in contractual agreements with suppliers and customers
  • managing office space and property and dealing with personnel administration
  • work is almost entirely office-based

What qualifications do I need to be a Secretary?

For secretarial jobs a degree in Secretarial Studies, Business Studies or Public Administration would be an advantage in gaining entry into this field. Recent analysis of recruitment practices in London shows that the majority of companies requested degree-level qualifications. However, entry without a degree or HND is possible with relevant work experience, which can lead to permanent secretarial jobs in a lot of cases. If you do not have much previous experience, a temping job will be an opportunity to try different sorts of secretarial or administrative work and help you decide what aspects you find particularly enjoyable and the sort of employer you would like to work for.

  • Starting secretary salaries range from £18,000 - £25,000 in London to £11,000 - £18,000 in other regions*
  • Secretarial jobs requiring 10 and 15 years' experience, salaries can rise to £30,000 - 40,000 for a top position in London*
