Health and Safety job description:

The main aim of your role will be to ensure companies adhere to health and safety policies and law. You will be presenting to companies the benefits and necessity of these guidelines and help develop preventative methods for each individual company. You will be working in different areas, or may wish to specialise in just one, such as:

Environmental Issues : Noise : Occupational Health : Hazardous Substances : Machinery at work : Fire Regulations

You will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and presenting Health and Safety strategies
  • Inspecting each site for potential health and safety problems
  • Ongoing inspections to ensure assigned policies have been implemented and adhered to
  • Having an up-to-date knowledge of the current Health and Safety legislation in place
  • Identifying risk and consequently safety procedures
  • Preparing accident / incident reports
  • Fire drills
  • Risk assessment

    Working Environment:

    The role is mainly office-based, however you will be expected to attend client sites for inspection. Working within the public sector this will mainly be hospitals, schools, colleges and local authorities.

    What qualifications / training do I need to work in Health and Safety?

    For junior roles, you may be lucky to find companies happy to take you on without specific qualifications, and train you up on the job. However most companies do require certain qualifications, such as an NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety (level 3) or a British Safety Council (BSC) certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (level 3). If you are looking for more senior roles, you will be expected to have a degree in Occupational Health and Safety.

    What personal attributes do I need to work in Health and Safety?

  • Good communication skills, written and spoken
  • Good negotiating skills - you will be convincing companies the importance of your safety procedures
  • Attention to detail
  • Logical
  • Ability to understand complex legislation and translate into everyday language
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Computer literate
  • Good level of fitness

    Salary Details:

  • For junior or starting roles, salary usually starts aroound £20,000*
  • For more senior roles, or if you have previous experience, you can earn between £25,000* & £40,000*, depending on type of experience and how specialised you are.
