What qualifications do I need to be a social worker?
The Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) is a professional qualification for all social workers and education welfare officers in England. A new degree has recently been introduced which will gradually replace the DipSW. The new degree will be a three-year course with opportunities for postgraduates to complete it in two years. An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in social care is a nationally recognised qualification that shows you are able to work to a set national standard.
Salary Details
There is a national salary scale for qualified social workers, but variations exist between jobs and regions. Some employers offer 'golden hellos' or enhancements, such as a car user allowance (including car lease schemes) or help with childcare.

- range of typical salaries in first QSW management roles (with 2 or 3 years experience): £21,000 - £35,000*
- typical salary for a QSW at senior level / with experience (e.g. after 10-15 years in the role): £50,000 plus*
