Building Surveyors Job Description: Typical Responsibilities
- ensuring projects are completed on budget and on time
- advising clients on schemes and projects and determining requirements
- carrying out feasibility studies
- preparing documents for tender and advising on appointing contractors
- preparing scheme designs with costings, programmes for completion of projects and specification of works
- determining the condition of existing buildings, identifying and analysing defects, including proposals for repair
What qualifications do you need to be a building surveyor?Normal entry into this career path is with an accredited degree in building surveying which meets the academic requirements of a professional body. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the main professional body. The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Association of Building Engineers (ABE) and the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) also offer related professional qualifications. Graduates with non-accredited degrees are required to undertake a conversion course to upgrade their academic qualification. This option is increasingly available by distance learning whilst in the job. In Greater London the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust offers work-based training opportunities for young people aged 16-24 with a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade A-C or equivalent.
Salary Details
- Graduate building surveyors can expect to earn between £15 - £18,000 per annum although in London this may be up to £20 - £22,000 per annum*
- Chartered building surveyors can expect to earn about £32,000 per annum – a partner can earn around £70,000*
- Salaries vary depending on location, with Central London generally offering the highest
