Our client is looking for an experience Trading Standards Officer to work in their offices based in Kingston.
The main purpose of the role of a Trading Standards Officer is to enforce relevant trading standards legislation and to provide advice and assistance to consumers and businesses.
Main duties and responsibilities include:- 1. To be responsible to the Principal Trading Standards Officer. 2. Have a sound working knowledge of relevant legislation and appeal cases enabling the post holder to carry out enforcement duties and to advise businesses, consumers and other Client Departments/organisations. 3. To carry out inspections, investigations, test purchases and projects together with resulting interviews in accordance with legislative requirements and office procedures with the aim of detecting and preventing crime. 4. Liaise and consult with other Client services and Central Government Departments on matters relating to the Trading Standards Service. 5. Be responsible for the enforcement of specialist legislation as allocated. 6. Liaise/consult with and give presentations to Government departments, local police and other organisations on matters appertaining to the work of the Service. 7. Ensure allocated complaints are effectively dealt with. Where civil complaints are justified, negotiate with traders to obtain best possible settlement for the complainant. 8. Where appropriate, give advice to consumers on the preparation of small claims to the County Court when negotiations have been unsuccessful. 9. Prepare detailed reports where offences are detected and to submit these to the Principal Officer within the timescales laid down. Make recommendations as to the most appropriate course of action. 10. Attend Magistrates', Crown and County Courts as a witness in relation to criminal proceedings/civil actions as required, and at other times as directed.
To be considered for this role you will need the following attributes:-
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE Advanced knowledge and experience of a range of enforcement activities with detailed knowledge of a specialist activity (E)Experience of working in a trading standards or similar environment (E) EDUCATION/QUALIFICATION Diploma in Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards (DCATS), Diploma in Trading Standards or equivalent). Current driving licence. SKILLS Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrate a high degree of literacy and numeracy. Ability to prioritise work and meet tight deadlinesDemonstrate an ability to take initiative, make decisions and work with minimum supervision.Ability to mentor staff and share best practice PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES & HEALTH Staff will need to visit traders at their place of work as well as consumers in their homes. Staff will need to read documents and inspect goods.
